It took only three day's for Mass Effect to sink it's claw's deep into me. To say it's the best game this year is a gross understatement of the term. My only problem has been that it took me two days to realize my character was not the one I wanted and start over again. However, their is something very exciting and cinematic about this game. I feel like the director of my own sci- fi epic. One starring a gorgeous female hero in a lesbian relationship with an alien (although technically her race is omni- sexual so they have no real males). Besides that juicy sub- plot, my favorite aspect of the game is my companions, or posse, as I call them. Other than my alien lesbian psychic companion; I have an alien cop, another female soldier with a deep faith in God that comes off as realistic, a male psychic who i shot down in the first ten minutes of the game, this weird alien chick in a mask who I feel like's engine's just a tad too much(think Kaylee from Firefly/Serenity), and my favorite, SharkHead. That's not his name but he looks like a walking shark, so that's what I see. Moral choices are constantly being brought up in the game and not just as cut and dry as "kill the bad guy" or "spare him because that's what good guy's do". This game in part represents what I love about video games and sci- fi in general, asking pertinent questions without seeming preachy. So far it's been a hell of a ride, and i look forward to where it takes me.<br /><br /><br />Oh and Seth Green as a wisecracking badass pilot is a win all the way.

    <lj:music>my teeth grinding</lj:music>

So a couple weeks ago I read that Robert Rodriguez was going to direct the remake of the movie Barbarella, which would star his new girlfriend Rose Mcgowan. Now,naturally I was really excited at this paring. Barbarella requires an oxymoron of control and over-the-top from the director, something which Rodriguez excels at. Look at Planet Terror,From Dusk 'til Dawn, and Sin City if you need any proof of that. Rose Mcgowan is never going to be seen standing at a podium accepting an Oscar, however within a certain genre she works very well. That genre happens to be over-the-top fantasy/sci-fi realm. Planet Terror and Charmed(their was a marathon on and I was bored) are both prime examples. <br /> Now today I come home from my class and find that my world has come to an end. Universal, who were budgeting the flick, decided to drop the film. And what was their excellent reasoning? They felt that Mcgowan could not carry a film and wanted the Rodgriguez to cast a bigger name like Jessica Alba or Halle Berry. <br /> Wow.Just Wow. This is why I hate Hollywood so much some time. Halle Berry is the Marisa Tomei of our era. If you don't get that reference,Tomei won an Oscar for My Cousin Vinny. Read that sentence again and consider what a weak year it must have been for her to take the prize. Also take a look at the rest of her movies(except that one with Christian Slater as the guy with a baboon heart, gets me every time) and you can see why she's seen as a fluke. Now look at Halle Berry. Was she great in Monster's Ball? No question. But the rest of her career has been spotty at best. Add into that the fact that she has never done well in the sci-fi realm, and that includes X-men, and I see nothing but disaster.<br /> Jessica Alba on the surface seems very similar to Mcgowan. They're both hot women who do fairly well in the genre. However Alba has always traded more on her looks than her acting ability, although she has fairly good timing for physical comedy. Mcgowan reminds me a lot of an Elvira like character which works a cheesy movie like Barbarella.<br /> Rodriguez has claimed that the real reason the studio dropped the film was budget concerns, but I think he's being nice on this one. Barbarella should be an over-the-top romp. Instead it'll probably be the second coming of Doom. I hate you Hollywood, you are made completely of fail.

I just got back from watching Pirates 3.... I don't know where to begin so I'm just gonna dive right in. I hated it. Let me be more clear, I hated almost every single part of this movie. I will try not to give too much away, but I feel that I had to suspend way too much disbelief to enjoy it. It sucks because I wanted to enjoy it. It was trying to be the kind of story I live for, about desperate people and honor amongst those percieved to be have none. But after the first five swerves I gave up on the believability of the characters. I feel that it fell prey to the same mistake that a lot of movie that attempt to be epic ddo. The first two acts feature way too much stilted dialogue, while trying to remain cryptic about some "big reveal". Then the movie tries to tie it all up in a bow at the Third Act, throw away the "reveal" as if they forgot about it. Now everything wasn't horrible. I loved Barbossa, mainly because he remained a mean cuss throughout the flick. The fight scenes were sweet when they could be understood, and the graphics remained top notch. Now the ending... I won't say what it is for those who haven't seen it, but it lef me with a bad taste in my mouth. Thanks in large part to the multiple swerves earlier in the film. I wish more movies like The Lord of The Rings were made because even though it cn be argued that the ssource material is the reason they were so good, I see it as somehing else entirely. Love for the material. In order for movies like The Rings,Pirates, or Spiderman(another franchise that has lost it's way) to work the director must treaat it tenderly and with love. Peter Jackson, Del Toroo, aand even Kevin Smith have all done their best work when they moved the source. Instead of sinking into the trend of "don't that look cool" that so many flicks do these days, they went with what would better tell the story. Look at a movie like Serenity and then watch the new Pirates and tell which one was made out of love. I have had my heart broken once again by Hollywood, and each time it heals it does so more calously that the last time...

I'm back once again to NOT rock your world... Well this is my hundredth attempt to restart this journal. and I hope it works this time. I've been a busy bee as of the last few years and haven't been in a mood to really write down what's up day to day.To update you all on the latest, I'll start with the most personal. I had what can only be described as a mental break down puntuated by a few mild ssuicide attempts/cries for help. I was trying to seek mental health care, which without insurance is distressingly difficult. So, I did the next best thing and rebuilt my mental health by myself, something I equate to someone with Parkinson's playing a game of Jenga. Nevertheless, I seem to be doing mucch better thanks mostly to my friends and my new roommate, Fiammetta the hamster. She's small, angry, and bites almost everyone who tries to touch her but she also stands up and stares at me whenever I walk into the room, which i find strangely comforting. Writting is asso big help when I can motivate myself to do it. A special thanks to Big Lou, who unknowingly probably saved my life by selling me this laptop I'm using right now. I don't know if I'm out the woods or if this just a calm before another squall, but right now, at this moment I feel really good and I hope that everyone who reads this will take at least a moment to appreciate how amazingly, blissfully, stupidly, precious this life is.
